Summer Slush

One of the easiest ways to stay hydrated and rejuvenated in the summer is to blend up some of your favourite fruit along with some ice and enjoy the chilling sensation of the slushie cooling you down from the inside.

Fresh Over Fizzy

While in the blazing heat we are tempted to rely on fizzy cold drinks to keep us cool, but these are very high in sugar and as such very calorie dense. Instead quench your thirst with freshly pressed juices, or just bite straight into the fruit!

Heedfully Hygienic

Even in our own home it’s easy to be exposed to harmful pathogens, so when hanging out with your friends at the beach, be extra mindful of the things you eat and drink. Ensure that the utensils you use have been thoroughly cleaned.

Slow Down on Sugar, Salty and Spicy

These flavours, and salt in particular, causes your body to retain water and heat, so refrain from overdoing it on the sugary snacks and the overly hot foods to ensure you stay cool and hydrated.

Stay Hydrated

Drink Lots of Water

It cannot be stressed enough that particularly in the summer, water is your best friend. While running around and having fun, sweating in the high sun and otherwise preoccupied, it’s important that you ensure your body still gets sufficiently hydrated. The general rule of thumb is to have about two litres of water per day, but schedule in some water breaks if you are very physically active, even when you are not thirsty. Water will also leave you feeling fuller and not craving sugary snacks, and it also delivers oxygen to the rest of your body, improves skin health and helps to regulate your body temperature.

Sweat Sparingly

While being active in the summer is very good for your overall health, it’s still important to ensure that you do not allow your body to overheat. Some good ways to achieve this include staying in the shade as much as possible, taking a cool shower at the beach or at home, and remember to apply sufficient sunscreen when you know you’ll be out in the sun all day.

Exercise

Sun Soaking

Summer is the time to be active. Anything can be turned into a sport, and as such anything can become a workout. It’s nearly impossible not to get in shape in the summer. On the beach, tossing a frisbee around can easily make you forget that you are actually exercising, and the same can be said for other summer activities.

While there are tons of different activities you can try out this summer – rollerblading, canoeing, tennis, etc. – the obvious choice would be swimming. Swimming provides one of the most balanced workouts and it is much healthier for your joins since you do not put any pressure on them. Not only that, but it helps you keep your breathing in check, keeps you cool, and provides great fun. To push yourself a bit further, you can roll out the beach ball or join an aerobics club – the possibilities are endless!

Move More

Summer is the time to keeping moving. So, this is the perfect opportunity to try out fun new activities to keep you busy. There are endless ways to achieve this, such as having a fitness class at the local park, participating in a morning yoga class, or taking a day trip with friends to a nearby hiking spot.

If you’re new to exercising, consider taking a stroll every morning or afternoon. Start by taking short, brisk walks around the block or in a nearby park and systematically opt for more intense routes that include a few hills. If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast you should walk on the beach. Sand makes the walk much more intense. Go online, look for some fun walking trails in your area and commit to a morning outing.

Summer time is especially good for working out, and it’s easy to get a full-body workout in a fraction of the time. High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT) allows you to get your heart rate and metabolism high in a much shorter amount of time, allowing you a much better workout.
