Physical health is often the only type of health that we tend to focus on, even when mental fitness carries just as much significance to achieve a long and happy life.
It’s important that you take appropriate measures to ensure that your mental dexterity is also stimulated so that you can reap all the possible benefits of a sharper, healthier and more motivated mind.
Set a Goal and Explain Why You Want to Achieve it
Setting goals can be one of the most important steps in the whole process. It gives you something to work towards, something to get out of bed for when life has you feeling down and it sets you up for success.
Write down your goals, then immerse yourself in what the result will make you feel like. Go so far as to frame your goals and hang them up on the wall in your bedroom. That way you are always reminded of what you’re working towards.
The best goal is one that is well planned out. Ensure that it’s specific so that you can give yourself clear direction on how to achieve it. Remember, your goals are there to show you the way. It’s also important to remember that you should set a goal that you can keep track of through milestones and/or dates. Above all else, ensure that your goals are realistic and achievable!
Reflect on What You’ve Achieved
If you have already set a goal or a few goals, take some time to reflect on everything you’ve already accomplished in pursuit of it. Taking incremental steps to achieve each goal makes it easy for you to be able to pat yourself on the back for accomplishing the milestones.
Often, when we praise ourselves for these milestones, they become stale and start losing meaning, so it’s good to occasionally take some time to remind ourselves what a big deal it was to achieve each goal.
You can do this by laying out your goal as a series of steps and the measures you’ve taken to achieve them, and what results they have yielded.
Check in With Yourself
In order for you to be able to achieve each goal you set for yourself, it’s important to take the time and self-reflect.
You can do this by accepting that you will, at times, become outwardly focused. It’s natural for your work/studies and all the other distractions in your daily life to be at the forefront of your mind. Once you have dealt with all of these distractions, you can redirect your thoughts back towards your goals again and the path you’ve set in place to achieve them. You can eliminate distractions and develop inward focus this way.
Remind Yourself That You’re in Charge
Often, we tend to go a little off-track due to self-doubt, fear of failure and concerns that our goals are not realistic enough or downright unattainable.
When you are experiencing these doubts, you can fall into a state of mind where you feel like you don’t have any power, or that you don’t have a choice in what’s happening. However, that is not the case.
Remind yourself that you are the one who set these goals, so it’s important that you appreciate the fact that you are the one responsible for how the progress toward achieving it goes. Remind yourself of exactly why you set these goals, what you’ve accomplished on the way to achieving them, and what you still have to do going forward.
Surround Yourself with People Who Motivate You
Family members, friends, co-workers or even acquaintances who frequent the same areas as you are all people who have some form of influence on how you manage your day-to-day life.
Happiness is infectious, so it makes sense that if you surround yourself with pleasant, positive people, it will do wonders for your mental health. If you’re feeling happy, you would also be less prone to complaining about things that are getting you down.
This makes for a more pleasant environment to be in, which means that you would have no problem prioritising your goals and staying motivated to stick to them.
If you tend to be around people that you admire and respect, you will soon find yourself imitating them in some ways. As the saying goes; ‘we become like those we choose to hold closest’. If your closest friends do not offer you this, it might be time to broaden your horizon a little.
